Bunker Hills Regional Park is a 1,600 acre park in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. It is part of the Anoka County park system. The park offers a great array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, camping (they have camper cabins!), playgrounds, disc golfing and more. The biggest highlight for a family with kids is probably the Bunker Beach Water Park.
Located within the park the Bunker Beach Water Park is a great spot to hit up on a hot summer day! The waterpark offers a lazy river, multiple slides, a splash area for younger children and a wave pool! The wave pool was the reason my kids were so excited to go. Their first experience in a wave pool was a Valleyfair, and they immediately fell in love. While I love Valleyfair, it is not somewhere that my pocket book allows me to go to more than once per year! Bunker Beach, while still on the spendy side, is not as expensive as a day at Valleyfair.
Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for those shorter than 48”. They do offer a discounted rate for admission after 4p. You can not bring food in, but you can get a stamp to go out and return. There are concessions on site.
The water park opens at 11am. We got there at about 11:15am on a weekend and there was a little bit of a line to get in. The place gets busy quick and they run out of tubes for the lazy river, so I would suggest that you actually hit that up first. Later in the day, you end up waiting for tubes. The wave pool in a zero depth entry, so even smaller kids can have fun playing in the waves. They have tubes available for the wave pool but those are an additional cost.
One feature that was really fun was the climbing wall that they have in one of the pools. There is also a playground and a sand play area. The splash zone in the middle is a little intense for really young kids, that is my only critic of the water park. There weren’t a lot of water play areas for the toddler crowd. The slides are pretty big for little ones and the water sprays are pretty intense for little ones. I notices that the parents there with babies and young toddlers were pretty much hanging out around the perimeter. My kids are 6 and 4, my 6 year old was still too short for the big slides but there was plenty of other things to keep her busy. My four year old loved the wave pool but the rest of it she was either too little for or didn’t like. Even the lazy river has a lot of shooting water that you don’t have the option to avoid.
After the water park we drove around the park. There are two excellent playgrounds on site. Bunker Hills is also home to the Anoka County Veterans Memorial. There is a beautiful flag installation and also a Korean War area tank that my kids thought was pretty cool to see. There are two gorgeous picnic pavilions available to rent.
