Osceola is approximately 40 miles northeast of the Twin Cities. It is just far enough a way that you feel like you are out of town, but still a very do-able drive for a day trip. Osceola is located on the St. Croix River, and is a very beautiful little town.
The highlight of our trip to Osceola was a ride on the Osceola and St. Croix Valley Train. The ride is approximately 90 minutes and runs on Saturdays and Sundays May-October. Reservations are recommended and can be made online at http://www.mtmuseum.org/?div=mtm&page=tickets
The train is a really cool, old refurbished multi-car train. During the ride you are able to walk about and check out all the different cars. There are employees on board to answer questions and tell you the history of the train. The kids absolutely loved being aloud to stand in the open air cars and watch the trees go zooming by!
After the train ride we had lunch at PY’s Saloon and Grill – which has an incredible patio. PY’s is located on Cascade Street adjacent to Cascade Falls Park. The food was typical bar food offerings but very good. The fried Mac and Cheese was a hit with my youngest daughter, and months later she still asks to go back!
After lunch we went down the MANY stairs to see Cascade Falls. Cascade Falls is a very pretty 25ft waterfall. My kids absolutely loved visiting the waterfall. There are many rocks and the water was not very high or running very fast when we were there so they were able to climb around below the falls. After exploring the falls we took the path that leads to the St. Croix River. It was a short, fairly easy hike. When we pointed out to my kids that what we were looking at on the other side of the river was Minnesota, and we were standing in Wisconsin they thought that was so cool! I love how easily amused they are sometimes!
After we were done playing in the river we made our way back up to Cascade Street and grabbed ice cream cones at an antique/ice cream shop. It was the perfect end to a perfect day!
While in the area other areas that could be explored: Interstate State Park (MN), Taylors Falls (MN)
